A Man Is Knocking At The Door
“A man is knocking at the door,
So cold and hungry; let him in!
Go on, what are you waiting for?
Imagine being in his skin!”
“Yes, I’m so sorry for him but
If I should open up the door
Once he is in then tell me what
I’ll have to feel so sorry for?
“To be compassionate and kind
Is what I’m best at being so—
I’ll keep his neediness in mind,
It’s just as far as I need go.”
That’s how it is with many who
Are fond of charity’s appeal;
So long as they need no more do
For, it’s a feeling that is real.
