Before The Lad Who Had No Fear

Before The Lad Who Had No Fear

Before the lad who had no fear
The giant towered ten feet tall—
His sword and javelin and spear
Appearing to make the lad small.

What business had he coming out
To meet Goliath on the field
Of valor? — he began to shout,
And bang in anger on his shield:

Coming to me with sticks and stones,
Those were the giant’s very words —
Come on and I will break your bones,
And feed your carcass to the birds!

But little David, unafraid,
Said, What good will your prowess be
Because it isn’t me you’ve made
But God Above your enemy?

And with that little David threw
A stone out of the sling he had;
Goliath fell before him too
And lay outstretched before the lad.

And David took Goliath’s sword,
Beheaded him, held up his head;
The army roundabout him roared
Before the Philistines who fled.

The victory by Heaven wrought
Which David was a party to
Was hardly by men’s prowess fought
When David great Goliath slew.

Goliath’s might would not avail
For all that he had ever warred,
But Israel’s spirit would prevail
Over Goliath’s spear and sword.
