This Couple Came Into The Shop
This couple came into the shop
And being that the pair was gay
They asked the baker put on top
A pair to make their happy day.
Since it’s this Christian bakery
It begs an open question: why
They didn’t know before that he
Would not be willing to comply?
The Christian baker said, I won’t
Bake such a cake to celebrate
A same-sex marriage, for I don’t
Believe I should participate.
Whilst they persisted anyway
For, saying he’d discriminate
Against the couple, being gay,
A penalty should compensate.
To decorate your cake’s an art
And artists are the people who
Invest not only time but heart
Into the kind of work they do.
And if you’re getting married why
Would you compel a man to bake
A cake because you’d want to buy
What willingly he wouldn’t make?
All services are bought and sold
But why’d a customer come say,
You do exactly as you’re told,
And better do it in my way!?
That’s not the way I’d want to speak
With one who’d bake a cake for me—
Unless occasion I would seek,
As in this case it seems to be.
So that it seems to me those gays
Had more than only cake in mind
So as to make their federal case
Of how it ought to be designed.
Whether it’s cake you decorate
Or else a picture that you paint
Your right is to discriminate
Between whatever is and ain’t.
If that is hate as some would say
Then what is love, when after all
A person does his thing the way
He wants it either large or small?
And those who say we have to do
It their way or else have to stop,
Impose their narrow-minded view
Upon the one who runs his shop.
So why would you ask anyone—
With bakeries beside to choose—
Unless the cake you wanted done
You knew the baker would refuse?
I wouldn’t ask someone to do
Some job for me if I were gay,
Which I for sure already knew
He wouldn’t do it for good pay—
Unless that’s what I asked him for,
Because I’d have a point to make
Against that owner of that store
Who’d never bake me such a cake.
What kind of court would overlook
These questions—obvious as that—
Unless they had to “throw the book”
At him who they have thrown it at?
