Why Is It That The Folks We Send

Why is it that the folks we send

Abroad into the way of harm

At home are not allowed to fend

Off terror—with a firearm?

Why is it that your Army base

Converted to a gun-free zone

Becomes that far unsafer place

Unarmed and even all alone?

What kind of madness is it that

Disarms a soldier of his right

To face armed killers in combat

And answer fire with a fight?

If soldiers who are hawks abroad,

For regulations they’ve obeyed

Are doves here on their native sod,

It’s obvious they are betrayed.
