Columbus Reasoned: If It’s True

Columbus Reasoned: If It’s True

Columbus reasoned: if it’s true
Earth’s spherical & I go west
I’ll reach the east, for it is due
To turn up—if I go in quest.

Along the Far-East-Asian shore
Were: China, India, Japan,
And that is what he’d voyage for
As part & parcel of his plan.

Yet even though Columbus went
(He’d underestimated, too)
For, where there was no Orient,
Another country lay in lieu;

In fact, how could he understand
There was no Asia there at all,
As on a brand new unknown land
Columbus happened to befall?

And even if he made such claim
As he could not substantiate,
Earth wouldn’t ever be the same:
Rotundity he’d demonstrate;

For, just as far as he should go
Across the uncrossable Sea,
Columbus was the first to show
Earth’s image in rotundity.

There was no edge to fall off of,
As one could sail forever on,
As if the world seen from above
Said no trip is to be foregone,

For anywhere you’d want to go,
The Earth’s rotundity still is,
As brave Columbus had to show,
For he proved his hypothesis.
