The eagerness of certain folks

To prove that evolution’s true

Led some to perpetrate a hoax

Which wasn’t difficult to do.

Because some people do believe

A monkey and a man compare

And as a consequence conceive

What actually just isn’t there.

I don’t know if you heard about

The saga of the Piltdown Man

As, after all, the tooth came out

Which was of an orangutan.

In looking for that “missing link”

They said had to exist between

Related species which they think

A human and an ape had been.

One archaeologist opined

If he’d fashion an artifact

He’d fabricate himself a find

To be the “missing link” he lacked.

He took a tooth belonging to

A jaw that was a simian’s

And made it look as if it grew

Out of a Homo sapiens’s.

It took them forty years to find

Their folly and expose the hoax

That was nowhere but in the mind

Of “linkage” being sought by folks

Who seem to find it hard to tell

Between a human and an ape,

Which most of us know very well

The fact of it’s hard to escape.
