The Mockingbird Is Making Sense

The Mockingbird Is Making Sense

The mockingbird is making sense
Of everything around about
Which is, by no coincidence,
Against the world he’s crying out.

He plays the part of this or that,
For what he would impersonate
’S the barking dog, meowing cat,
A rusty hinge of a creaking gate,

A cricket’s chirp, a bullfrog’s croak,
The mockingbird has managed to
Make out of everything a joke
By doing over what they do;

Until you wonder which is what—
The meaning or the metaphor?
The bird that’s never nothing but
What he is mocking the world for.
