The Germans Put The Jews Inside

The Germans Put The Jews Inside

The Germans put the Jews inside
The cattle cars to be conveyed
For being gassed until they died—
And into ovens they’d be laid.

What often happened on the way
(That’s what my story is about)
Due to snowfalls they faced delay,
So from the cattle cars got out.

The winter’s weather, bitter cold,
The hungry, weary travelers,
From very young to weak and old,
Sat outside of the cattle cars.

It happened that this Jewish lad
Sat down beside an aged Jew,
Who shivered, being poorly clad,
A ragged coat he had on too,

Till that young lad took pity on
The shiverer beside him, and,
Did what he saw had to be done,
Massaging his half-frozen hand.

The older urged the younger not
To stop but go on rubbing so,
Cold as he was, he warmed a lot,
Amid a frozen night of snow;

Until by morning all they found
Beside their empty cattle cars,
Were lifeless bodies left around,
Except for those two travelers:

The lad and the old man beside
The lifeless—dying due to frost—
The only souls who hadn’t died,
A cold night of the Holocaust.
