Why Do We Rest On Saturday?

Why Do We Rest On Saturday?

Why do we rest on Saturday
The seventh day of every week?
As on that day the Lord did stay,
And by His rest, made it unique.

For six days He would innovate
The details of the earth and sky
As, everything that He’d create,
His greatness was reflected by.

But when He rested from His task
So as to see what He brought out,
That was as though He were to ask
What was His handiwork about?

As all that He made out of naught
Of this and that, of less or more,
The Lord in seeing all He wrought
Considered what He made it for;

Which wasn’t only what He made,
Though wonderful as it might be,
The Sabbath being when he stayed
To see what He had made to see.

Not how He did what He had done
But why He did it He would rest,
So that the new world was begun
For what the old had to suggest.

What does the Sabbath signify
But that Creation doesn’t end
With how it works but rather why
Its meaning then has to transcend

Its being there that goes beyond
The contents of an earth and sky
To show there is a deeper bond
Between the object and the eye.
