The anger firing the base

Of parties to the left or right

Is volatile in either case

As both are spoiling for a fight;

So for that reason seize the day

To stand upon a principle

Lest, giving in to your dismay,

Action becomes impossible!

Go with the guy who doesn’t put

His finger in the wind to see

Which way the wind is blowing but

Has proven his integrity!

Progressive or Conservative—

To either of the sides you lean

Select the clear alternative—

Don’t shilly-shally in between!

For when your anger which is real

Depends on Reason’s discontent

It fires you to act with zeal

Against all disillusionment;

For disillusionment’s the drug

That Atlas was afflicted by

Who, with a great titanic shrug 

Unshouldered the entire sky.

It’s not for you now to withdraw

Into your academic shell—

Don’t exercise your tragic flaw

By being super-logical!

Don’t turn away from politics

As if you were above it all!

What’s broken is for you to fix—

Shoulder the sky or it will fall!
