My mother came with a complaint
To Mrs. Roth in the first grade,
“All that he does is draw and paint;
He cannot read or write,” she said.
When Mrs. Roth was not concerned
That I’d not read or written yet,
My mother said, “He hasn't learned
The letters of the alphabet!”
But Mrs. Roth said, “That’s all right—
Just let him paint as he does now.
In good time he will read and write;
When he decides he will learn how.
“No matter what you may suggest
Let him go after his intent—
By doing things that he knows best
He learns according to his bent.”
