Whatever It Was It Was That

The seeker put before the sought
Was the Cartesian method that
Gave its preeminence to thought
Over what was to be looked at.

Now you can seek a lot that way
But mostly what you learn about
Would be the seeker, I would say,
For looking in—instead of out.

But all the same, myself, I’d be
For anything, I’m looking at,
Whatever, that is, which I’d see
I’m very glad of knowing that

I’m seeing something there at all
As I would rather say, hey look!
At something that is big or small
As long as that my fancy took.
