Somebody Asked Me Yesterday
Somebody asked me yesterday
When I was on the Number 3
If he was going the right way
To get where he wanted to be.
Where is it that you want to go?
The station he said was uptown
And I explained that wasn’t so
Since our train was going down.
He said the train was going up,
And that is fortunate because
I meant to find a Brooklyn stop,
Not even knowing where I was.
He asked me if the train was due
To stop on Ninety-sixth or not;
While, once again, I told him to
Get off the train since I forgot
The local train could get him there
And not the Number 3 Express,
Although the 3 was headed where
He had been going nonetheless.
So, all in all, the knowledge that
Is my advice is awfully wrong
And yet no matter where I’m at
Somehow that I still get along,
And if he hadn’t asked me for
Directions he had asked of me
I would’ve been a lot, lot more
Lost than it was I came to be.
So when it comes to give advice
To anybody needing it
What I have come to recognize
Is, it is for my benefit.
On Giving Directions
