This Morning As I Look At Me
This morning as I look at me,
The mirror I’m reflected by
Shows what it is I have to see
That’s visible to naked eye.
Before I woke when I still slept
I dreamt a very vivid dream;
The image in my head I’d kept,
So vivid did the image seem.
A woman I’d been speaking to
Appeared amazing to behold,
And, as I held her within view,
I quite forgot that I was old.
A ring she had on her left hand;
Its socket being without stone
Said it was not a wedding band—
Unspoken for she was her own.
Then she recited lines I wrote,
Reciting as it were by heart,
That I had scribbled on a note,
And were a sample of my art.
I told her I should find a rock
And fill the socket of her ring
As I would bind her in wedlock
The rock a token of the thing.
It was decided there and then
Together we had to be wed,
But suddenly I woke up when
I found myself alone in bed.
And, she is what I can’t forget,
Despite me in a looking glass
Yet, for that jewel I should set,
Within the ring worn by a lass.
