A Lot Of People Want To Say

A Lot Of People Want To Say

A lot of people want to say
Columbus wasn’t a nice guy
But even so he found a way
To cross a mighty ocean by,

And it was a stupendous feat,
For him to end up on a shore
The way he did it to complete
What nobody did heretofore.

Because he’d had his vision that
A voyage being made around
A globe led west where he’d be at
That destination to be found.

They’d say it was by accident
He found it, being unaware,
As if his voyage nothing meant
(“America’s already there”)!

Such people are so blinded by
Resentment so as to describe
Achievement by a jaundiced eye—
(Columbus isn’t of their tribe)

He doesn’t fit their paradigm;
He didn’t have it all in mind;
He wasn’t of some other time;
They see Columbus from behind,

And talk as if he should’ve known
America was there instead
Of seeing what was to be shown:
The mariner was really led

By Providence to find the place
Where he suspected it to be
As by his voyage he’d embrace
The world of his discovery.
