The Nazis Put The Jews Inside
The Nazis put the Jews inside
Of cattle cars upon the tracks
To Auschwitz on the final ride
To smoke arisen out of stacks.
It happened there was a delay
(It’s what this story is about)
Some interruption on the way
So all the passengers got out.
The weather was so very cold,
As tired, famished travelers,
Sat altogether, young and old
Beside the empty cattle cars.
It happened that a Jewish lad
Sat down beside an aged Jew;
Both shivering and sadly clad,
As hard to tell them apart too.
The young lad, taking pity on
The shiverer beside him, and,
In seeing what had to be done—
To warm another’s frozen hand
The older urged the younger not
To stop, to keep on rubbing so,
Cold as he was, he warmed a lot
Amidst a night of fallen snow;
Until by morning all they found
Beside those empty cattle cars,
Were lifeless bodies left around,
Except for those two travelers:
One lad and an old man beside
The lifeless (dying of the frost)
The only ones who hadn’t died
One night amid the Holocaust.
