Does Thought Affect DNA?

If genes could be affected by
Ones meditating, possibly
It might be a good reason why
You’d go into the library,

And maybe read a book or two
To learn a little more about
Whatever you might have in you
So as to bring it further out.

Considering you’re predisposed
To anything that’s positive
Unless your mind’s already closed
Except to what is negative.

Be that as may be some folks say
It proves that evolution’s so
Though should it go the other way
(To devolution it would go.)

Considering the missing link
It’s very possible the ape
Who wanted like a man to think
Could alter his genetic shape

To find himself the more fit for
A place on evolution’s scale
So human-like he could be more
Without a monkey’s silly tail.

I think that would be peachy keen
But how to think himself a man
(Without the man around, I mean)
I don’t see how a monkey can

Imagine what he’d want to be
Without his seeing that before,
For then it all seems moot to me:
With nothing to look forward for;

If evolution started from
The bottom, so as to ascend,
Wherever he was coming from
A man would have had to descend,

So evolution doesn’t solve
The very question that it begs:
Why would a monkey then evolve
And stand up on his own hind legs?

But for a likeness of the one
Whom he attempts to emulate,
So nothing could in fact be done
To change his former apish state;

So that to turn the simian
To that which simians are not
A monkey needs a mind like man
To want to have what men have got.
