The donkey fell into the pit
As everybody roundabout
Would take their pity upon it
To get the donkey in it out.
Though seeing that nobody had
The wherewithal to lift him up
His braying made them very mad
So that they wanted him to stop.
(The racket of his braying hurt
Making them put an end to it)
When they began to shovel dirt
Down on the donkey in the pit
As they piled lots of dirt upon
The donkey in that pit below
The donkey disappeared anon
(No more of him was left to show)
But for the fact that they had filled
The pit over the donkey’s ears
The donkey for the moment stilled
Pops up again—he reappears,
Amazing those around who’d see
The dirt that they had piled upon
The donkey would turn out to be
The cause for what he’d do anon!
For all the dirt thrown over him
The level of that pit was raised;
The donkey climbed over its rim
And everyone was just amazed
For, by the help of Him on High,
His creatures being down below
Are raised up (all the more so) by
The cause of their aforesaid woe.
Now this, of course to all applies—
For anyone that’s overwrought—
Whilst circumstances might arise
It oughtn’t ever be for naught:
Your donkey might fall in the pit,
While smitten by adversity,
To choose to make the most of it,
Its opposite can come to be.
An Asinine Anecdote
