Without Haman: No Purim

As Haman drew that fatal lot
To fall upon the day he drew
His lottery advanced that plot
Aimed at destroying every Jew.

Therefore, this joyous holiday,
(By lot or pur—the very same)
Reflects Haman's intent to slay
Us: so Purim derives its name.

To who, then is it that we owe
This holiday we celebrate—
For what occurred so long ago,
Recalling its eternal date?—

But Haman for the fatal lot
Whose drawing is the reason why
Queen Esther foiled that evil plot
At the behest of Mordecai.
