If Mordecai had only bowed
To Haman and forgot his pride,
And if he hadn’t been so proud
Haman had not been mortified;
So everything would’ve been fine,
There would’ve been no lottery,
And nobody’d get drunk on wine
And there would be no revelry.
But Mordecai stood up instead
Before the wicked Haman, who
Seeing he wouldn’t bow his head
Avenged himself upon the Jew.
What should he do to Mordecai
In order to avenge his pride?
But ensure every Jew would die
So Haman plotted genocide.
As Haman went before the King,
Persuading him he ought to sign
And seal the decree with his ring
That was in fact the bottom line.
So Esther then had to reveal
Her true Jewish identity—
(The ring, already in the seal)
Her time for action had to be.
So that Esther would risk her life
To save her people which she did.
(Achashuerus loved his wife
And did as his beloved bid.)
And Haman now would be displayed
For how he was a wicked man;
Unmasked she’d end his masquerade
To foil Haman’s nefarious plan.
The Fast of Esther that we keep
Reminds us, of how unity
Among the Jews has to run deep
If to annul the bad decree.
No matter what comes to befall
Us, if we just become as one,
Against their overwhelming all,
Our battle will again be won;
Though every generation brings
Another tyrant bent upon
Destroying us, princes and kings
Arise before us to be gone;
For every Haman—Mordecai;
For every Zeresh—Esther Queen;
And no one knows the reason why
But that’s how it has always been.
