The Star-Gazer In The Well

A man who was accustomed to
Gaze at the stars by evening fell
As he was keeping them in view
Down into a deep emptied well.

Somebody who was passing by
And heard the fellow crying out
Had understood the reason why
By what he’d have to talk about.

“What’re y’ doing there?” he said.
“I’m seeing Mercury and Mars—
And Jupiter—(my aching head!)
Why, all that I can I see is stars!”

“If you had kept your eyes below,
On what they are supposed to be,
You’d not be where it is you’re so
That stars is all that you can see!”

  1. Aesop's Fable (double joke on star gazers and wells they viewed stars from)
